Institutional Organisation of the Environment Sector

In 1980, a committee on the environmental protection was established as the first official environmental affairs committee. The panel continued its work until the issuance of the Law on the Environment in 1996 and its numerous implementation edicts. In 2002, a Royal Decree was issued on establishing Public Commission for the Protection of Marine Resources, Environment, and Wildlife to develop the necessary plans and policies to achieve sustainable development principles which are related to the protection of the environment and its resources, in order to ensure the well-being of the citizens. In 2012, a Royal Decree was issued on the establishment of the Supreme Council for the Environment which is entrusted with protecting the environment, as well as preserving natural resources and developing them for the coming generations.
