Message from the Vice President

Active Role of the Supreme Council for Environment

Faisal bin Rashid bin Isa Al KhalifaKingdom of Bahrain demonstrated several years ago its remarkable efforts to protect the environment and preserve its natural resources. This prompted the country’s leadership to set up the Supreme Council for Environment as the result of a royal decree issued by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

Along with the setting up of the Council, under the chairmanship of His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, came a strong desire of the leadership to devote substantial attention to sustainable development to ensure a problem-free life for future generations, ensure a balance between economic and social development and protection of the environment.

The government has always been keen to develop flexible policies on the environment and is aware that more opportunities can be grabbed and exploited to spread awareness on the importance of keeping the surroundings clean and to develop a methodology to understand its principles.

The Council, through its programmes and activities to increase environmental awareness and to spread a green culture, is also aware of the importance of community partnership, its effective role in achieving fair and sustainable development, and in changing the negative behaviour and patterns of people.

Preserving the environment and conserving natural resources is today a priority for achieving sustainable development, which eventually aims to bring about real improvement in the lives of the people. That is why the Council strives to maintain principles of sustainable development for the current and future generations.

Preserving the environment is not only the responsibility of the state, but of society as a whole.

Faisal bin Rashid bin Isa Al Khalifa
Vice President of the Supreme Council for Environment
